The Westport Fire Department was dispatched on August 17th to I 95 Southbound between exits 19 and 18 for a report of a Motor Vehicle Accident, tractor trailer vs car with one of the vehicles on fire. The initial dispatch was for Engine 5, Rescue 3, Engine 6 and the Shift Commander. Fairfield Fire department was also dispatched due to the incident location.
First arriving units confirmed a two vehicle accident involving a tractor trailer which was partially down an embankment and a passenger car which was on fire. All occupants were out of the vehicles. Engine companies worked on extinguishing the fire and providing patient care along with Westport EMS while the Rescue Company assessed the tractor trailer making sure it was stabilized in place. One of the diesel tanks was found ruptured and the leaking diesel fuel was confined and contained. DEEP and a Hazmat clean-up crew responded to off load the remaining diesel fuel and clean up the spill prior to the tractor trailer being moved.
CSP assisted on scene to investigate and control traffic along with DOT. All three travel lanes were shut down for an extended period of time during the incident. The last Fire Department unit cleared at 5:12 AM.
