On May 18th at 12:41pm the Westport Fire Department responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident involving a truck that rolled over. The fire department responded with 2 Fire Engines, a Rescue Truck, Safety Officer, and the Shift Commander. Engine 5 was first on scene and reported a roll off dumpster truck had left its hoist in the raised position. This caused the truck to strike the Hillspoint Road overpass (bridge) and roll over.
The driver of the truck was able to free himself from the vehicle. Westport EMS responded to treat and transport the driver to a nearby hospital for evaluation.
Firefighters found a hydraulic fluid leak that could not be stopped. Firefighters applied speedy dry, hazmat pads, and hazmat booms to contain the spill. Additionally, it was determined that the vehicle was powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). Firefighters successfully shut down the CNG fuel system and determined there was no leak. The CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) responded to coordinate and oversee the hazardous materials clean up.
The CT Department of Transportation responded to assess the damage to the bridge. The DOT determined that the bridge could remain open. CT State Police assisted on scene with traffic control.
The last fire department unit cleared the scene at 2:45pm. CT DEEP, CT DOT and CT CSP remained on scene to coordinate the spill cleanup.
